How to Create a Dynamic SegmentLast Updated: May 09, 2018
Dynamic segments are based on specific criteria and are ever changing. They’re used mostly for nurturing, onboarding, and retention.
A dynamic segment is tied to a specific set of filters such as:
- startDate is “< 30 days”
- and plan is “Enterprise”
In this doc, I’ll walk you through the process of creating a Dynamic Segment, as well as some great examples that will help you get started.
How to Create a Dynamic Segment
- From your Drift Dashboard, you can get to your CRM by clicking to view your contacts.
- Once in the CRM, you can create a segment by adding a new filter. Select a filter either by Property or Event.
- After you select your Property or Event, you can tailor it to your specific needs. You can add as many filters as needed.
- Once you’ve added all filters, you can save the segment with a specific name to that group. Now you can filter and interact with your contacts based on their Dynamic Segment!
Here are some segment examples to get you started
Example 1: So, you have a group of people who haven’t been active in a while. You can break these folks out to communicate specifically with them.
Property: lastActive “is more than ‘30’ days ago”
This segment is great to try and re-engage customers who haven’t been active in a while. Do you want to send your customers an incentive or promotion code to get them back? Give them tips on ways to use your service that they never thought of before?
Example 2: Want to build a group of people who aren’t paying but are showing some interest in upgrading or buying something?
Property: plan “equals ‘
Event: page “is equal to ‘
This segment would be ideal to engage and attempt to convert into paying customers. You can create a Playbook that specifically targets this segment at their most engaged point.
Example 3: If you want to identify the people who are unhappy with your business, you can do so by
Property: nps_one_time_count “is less than or equal to ‘6’”
This segment has given your product or their experience a detractor rating. This is a great way to separate detractors from passives or promoters (you can create separate dynamic segments for all three!). Maybe you want to create a Playbook that tries to delight your detractors, or maybe you want to ask your promoters to follow you on social media. There are so many different options!
